Sexual education is a Universal Right
Within the scope of Erasmus+ Youth Projects by the European Union and Turkish National Agency, the training project aiming to increase the competence of the European Union youth workers in the field of sexuality education for the disabled was carried out between 5-12 June 2021 in Düzce Avni Akyol Teachers’ House. The project hosted a total of 28 participants from England, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Estonia, France, Portugal, Spain, Czech Republic and Turkey.
During the project, it was aimed for the participants to learn the stages of sexual development and the basic points of positive sexual identity development in disabled individuals, to comprehend social skills related to sexual identity, to gain the ability to prepare an individual sexual education program for people with mental retardation, and to learn new methods and techniques in sexual education.
The project also contributes to the awareness of tolerance among the participants from different countries by seeing the differences between cultures.
Participating youth workers, who were informed about sexuality education for the disabled in the project, will plan and implement the trainings for these individuals and their families in the future, and they will be able to work more effectively and efficiently with the problems of the disabled in terms of sexuality.
